You should be asking yourself “Why?”

Rarely are they bad employees, just frustrated and frustrating; and most likely not a good fit for the job. As a manager, you are expected to hire the right person for the job. Unfortunately, most managers do not have the tools or insight to do that well. Why? They have never been exposed to the fundamentals of communication and behavioral styles, and simply "wing it”.

Employee Quits…

and he becomes a YouTube sensation.
You may be thinking … this employee is nuts and the manager isn't such a nice guy either. Most likely, neither is true. This best avoided notoriety may be the result of a bad job fit.
What is REALLY going on?
What was the job? What did it require? Social interaction? Did it provide new and exciting challenges? Was it suited for someone creative and inventive? Perhaps the job required quite the opposite: calm demeanor, supportiveness, empathy, adherence to standards and following the rules.
What was the employee like? Calm, steady, predictable and composed; someone who followed the rules? Hardly! He appears to be an extrovert with many friends, a big following, and a real creative streak. Probably not a rule follower!
The result?
The manager and the employee clearly did not see eye to eye! This disconnect turned into a fiasco for the hotel, and the ex-employee... well, he sure became notorious.
Recognizing and understanding behavioral styles can help to eliminate potential mismatches leading to bad hiring decisions. Perhaps this manager’s lack of understanding led him to hire someone who appeared to be good choice, when his “style” was way off the mark for what was required.
Understanding Behavioral Dimensions
This article won’t make you an expert but can provide some insight into an extremely practical and useful tool that, when understood, can quickly revolutionize your effectiveness and leadership ability. The Behavioral Insights, more commonly known as DISC, focuses on four behavioral dimensions:
D: Dominance, I: Influence, S: Steadiness and C: Compliance
What else distinguishes the styles? "D" and "I" types are extroverts while "S" and "C" types are introverts. “D” and “C” styles are task-focused while “I” and “S” styles are people-focused.
Another way to understand the basic differences is in their approach to the world:
D = Approach to problems and challenges: "D" behaviors are decisive and demanding, they are the drivers;
I = Approach to influencing others to your point of view: "I" behaviors are interactive and enthusiastic, they are the influencers;
S = Approach to the pace and variation of the environment: "S" behaviors are patience and calmness, they are the steady ones;
C = Approach to rules and procedures established by others: "C" behaviors are cautiousness and analytical, they are the compliant ones.
Conclusion
For over 30 years, the DISC profile has opened the door to recognizing and understanding different behavioral styles, and how each style will react in similar environments. Understanding your own DISC style and recognizing the styles of others, can provide insights into effective communication. Effective communication is a key to building strong relationships.
